Hair Loss Awareness Month

Did you know that alopecia, otherwise known as hair loss, is one of the most common disorders diagnosed and treated by dermatologists?

Both men and women may experience hair loss and it is a physical and emotional process that can devastate someone’s self-confidence and wreak havoc on their social participation.

Alopecia may be attributed to factors such as aging, genetics, hormones, nutrition, stress and specific medical conditions. Hair loss may be sudden or it may thin over time. Or, there may be a bald spot or receding hairline and loss of eyebrows. It’s important to determine the cause of any hair loss.

Did you know? Hair loss may also be caused by tight hairstyles that pull on hair. There’s even a name for it: Traction alopecia. If you frequently wear a hairstyle (ponytails, buns, braids, locs, or cornrows for example) that is too tight, pulls on your hair and/or is worn for a long period of time, consider regularly changing your hairstyle or wearing a natural hairstyle for a period of time. Pay careful attention to your hair if you wear tight hairstyles that pull, as once traction alopecia advances, hair loss can be permanent.

Have you noticed signs of hair loss? Contemporary Dermatology’s board-certified dermatologists will get to the root of the problem quickly.
