Skin Care Awareness Month

Skin Care Awareness

This month is Skin Care Awareness Month and we're sharing some general tips to help you keep your skin in tip-top shape:

Cleanse your skin each day with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and warm water. Products labeled "noncomedogenic" will not clog your pores or cause acne. If you wear makeup, be sure to remove it before going to sleep.

Take care of scrapes and cuts to ensure they don't become infected. Clean the area daily and keep it covered with a bandage until it heals.

Trying a new skin care product? Test it first. Apply the product (as directed on the package) to a one-inch square on the underside of your arm. If your skin becomes itchy, swollen or red, wash the product off and stop using it. If there is no reaction, continue to test it over a week's time. Contact your dermatologist if your reaction is more severe.

Keeping your skin well-moisturized and hydrated is key to maintaining healthy skin. Apply moisturizer to your hands and body immediately after washing and drying to lock in moisture. Opt for non-comedogenic products that contain one or more moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

Hydration begins within. Stay hydrated by drinking at least 8 cups of water daily. It’s good for your skin and contributes to your skin’s elasticity.

Be sure to have an annual skin cancer screening. Our board-certified dermatologists will explain how to perform a self-exam between your appointments so you know what's normal and when a spot or mole changes
