Dark Patches & Pigmentation

July is Hyperpigmentation & Melasma Month
Spending more time in the sun? Worried about the appearance of dark patches or spots resembling freckles on your face or body?

Hyperpigmentation or melasma may be the cause of blotchy patches and discoloration. Both conditions become worse with sun exposure.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which some areas of your skin are darker than others. It is caused by excess melanin within your skin, and this condition can appear in multiple ways. For example, the dark spots may be brown, black, gray, red, or pink and appear as spots or even patches. Hyperpigmentation can appear anywhere on the face or body and root causes of it include inflammation, medication, and cosmetics.

Melasma typically appears on the face, and sometimes the neck or arms of women, most often during pregnancy. While melasma usually affects women, men can develop it too.

Although hyperpigmentation and melasma can be bothersome and some individuals may feel self-conscious about their appearance, these conditions are treatable.

Treatment for hyperpigmentation may include a custom skin care regimen, and your board-certified dermatologist may recommend treatment with PicoWay Laser. Treatment for melasma may include a prescription strength cream.

With both conditions, protecting your skin from the sun is key, as hyperpigmentation and melasma will come back if your skin is exposed to the sun without sunscreen.

If you notice changes in your skin, or signs of hyperpigmentation or melasma, make an appointment with your board-certified dermatologist who can provide an accurate diagnosis and create a customized treatment plan that is right for you.
