A Clearer Complexion

Acne Awareness Month
Acne is among the most common skin conditions in the U.S.

What causes acne?
Acne is caused by a blend of clogged pores, dead skin cells, and bacteria, and commonly shows up on the face, chest, and back. Generally, acne is a blend of whiteheads, pimples, blackheads, small cysts, as well as other itchy, red, and inflamed areas on the skin.

While many cases are mild and may be controlled with prescription drugs and a consistent at-home cleansing routine, some patients have severe acne that leads to scarring.

What causes acne flare-ups?
Acne flare-ups occur for many different reasons. Your skin may be reacting to hormone changes, stress, or a new diet.

How do I take better care of my skin?
Patients can generally benefit from a regular skincare routine that includes gentle cleansing and moisturizers. You should also avoid harsh scrubs and over-the-counter acne treatments. Our board-certified dermatologists can help you determine the root cause of your flare-ups and develop a treatment plan, which may range from custom at-home cleaning methods to medications and laser treatments, to help you achieve clear skin.
