National Healthy Skin Month

Caring for your skin is essential. Your skin protects your body from external factors such as germs, substances and temperature. Following a basic skin care routine will help to ensure healthy skin.

Gentle cleansing. Nowadays, there are countless skin care products on the market. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser for your morning and evening skincare routine. Wash with warm (not hot) water and avoid scrubbing your skin, as it may cause irritation.

Keeping skin moisturized is key. Signs of dry skin include tight, itchy or flaky skin. Left unchecked, dry skin may worsen and lead to cracked or bleeding areas that are susceptible to bacteria and infection. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing and drying to lock in moisture. (If you are using a medication or a treatment on your skin, be sure to follow your board-certified dermatologist's instruction about when to apply specific products.)

Look for “noncomedogenic” moisturizers that won’t block pores and that contain one or more moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

Protect from sun damage year-round. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, which protects against UVA and UVB rays. Even during the winter months, the sun can damage skin, particularly when water and snow reflect the rays of the sun.

Take steps to prevent skin cancer. In addition to wearing sunscreen and practicing sun safety measures, check your skin on a regular basis for new or changing moles and other signs of skin cancer such as spots that change, itch or bleed. Be sure to schedule your annual, comprehensive skin cancer screening.

If are concerned about any skin changes, don’t delay. Make an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists.
