National Healthy Skin Month

Keeping Your Skin in Tip-Top Shape

As the largest organ in the body, our skin keeps us healthy in so many ways. Did you know that your skin protects your body from germs, temperature, and chemicals? Not only that, it is also a good indicator of your overall health.

Be aware of changes in your skin. Extremely dry, itchy skin that does not improve despite a regimen of daily moisturizer, or skin that develops a rash, should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist. There can be a number of different causes – from atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and eczema, to folliculitis, psoriasis and other conditions. An itchy and changing spot on the skin may indicate skin cancer.

November is National Healthy Skin Month, which serves as a reminder of the importance of good skin care practices. Here are a few tips:

Establish a daily skin care routine. Your routine does not have to be complicated. Use a gentle, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic cleanser and moisturizer in the morning and evening each day.

Enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet as they nourish skin from the inside out. Citrus fruits, watermelon, sweet potatoes, bell pepper, tomato and avocado contain vitamin C and other nutrients. Watermelon and tomatoes also contain the powerful antioxidant, Lycopene, which helps protect cells from damage.

Drink plenty of water. At least eight cups of water a day is beneficial to your skin as well as your body. Hydrated skin has greater elasticity and is less dry.

Establish a sleep routine. Between seven and nine hours of sleep is recommended. As we sleep, our skin regenerates. Sleep also supports collagen production.

Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen to help reduce your risk of skin cancer, and be sure to check your skin on a regular basis for signs of skin cancer.

Love your skin. We encourage you to take a moment to truly appreciate your skin's role in keeping you healthy.
