October is Eczema Awareness Month
You’ve heard of eczema, but what is it? Eczema is a chronic skin problem that creates tiny cracks on the skin or scalp, and may look like rough, red patches. The most common areas affected by eczema are the hands, feet and around the eyes, but it can appear anywhere on the body.
The most common form of eczema in adults is atopic dermatitis, where skin is dry, persistently itchy, and inflamed. Eczema is not contagious. Environmental factors and/or a family history of eczema may make someone more susceptible to this uncomfortable skin condition.
What causes eczema?
Eczema is thought to be the immune system reacting to stress, food, allergens, or other substances. Eczema makes it hard to resist scratching as it is a condition that is extremely itchy. However, scratching the cracked skin can make it even more susceptible to an infection, which may require a prescription antibiotic.
Everyday care
Although eczema cannot be cured, it can be managed to ease symptoms and lead to clearer skin. It’s important to keep skin moisturized with a mild, fragrance-free cream every day. Apply a thick layer of this cream immediately after bathing while skin is still slightly damp, which helps to lock in moisture. Your board-certified dermatologist may also suggest a medicated ointment or cream to be applied to affected areas as well.
Whether you've suffered from eczema for a long time or you have just discovered an itchy rash on your skin, there are many treatment alternatives available.
Your board-certified dermatologist can diagnose and provide a customized treatment plan to handle your condition by minimizing your symptoms and diminishing the chance of future outbreaks.

Caring for One of Our Own:
We are reaching out today with a heartfelt request to support someone who has meant so much to our Contemporary Dermatology family and to the Marstons Mills community — our dear friend and colleague, Beth Gardiner.
Beth was a member of the founding team that helped launch and operate our Marstons Mills office in 2022. From the very beginning, she brought something special with her: a warmth, kindness, and genuine positivity that made everyone around her feel welcome. Her smile was infectious, her spirit uplifting, and her commitment to those she worked with never went unnoticed.
Beth and her husband raised their four boys in the Marstons Mills area, building a life deeply rooted in the community they love. Today, their family continues to grow, and Beth remains surrounded by the people who care about her most.
Sadly, this past year brought devastating news when Beth was diagnosed with a serious illness. As she and her family face the difficult road ahead, they are also facing the emotional and financial challenges that come with ongoing care and treatment.
Now, it is our turn to care for Beth.
We hope you will consider making a contribution to help Beth and her family during this incredibly difficult time. Every donation, no matter the size, can help ease some of the financial burden and allow Beth and her loved ones to focus on what matters most — her care, her family, and her recovery.
If you are unable to contribute financially, sharing the fundraiser is another meaningful way to help. You never know how far a simple share can reach.
Beth has spent years giving her time, energy, kindness, and heart to the people around her. Let's come together and give some of that kindness back.
Please keep Beth and her family in your thoughts, and consider supporting them by donating or sharing the fundraiser.
With caring hearts, we can make a difference for one of our own.
